Walking Tour: “Swansboro by the Sea”

Led by retired history professor and local historian, Amelia Dees-Killette

Swansboro is located on the mainland at the tip of the southern Outer Banks, where the Intracoastal Waterway, White Oak River, and Atlantic Ocean come together.  The walking tour will explore the town’s unique history as one of North Carolina’s oldest coastal communities.  

Once an early American port and for generations a working waterfront, its restaurants and shops are a popular destination for locals and travelers.

Highlights Include Tales of:  

      • Native Americans 
      • Otway Burns’ Prometheus
      • Civil War Union Raids 
      • Windmills, dirt roads, freight and line boats, and fish houses
      • Privateers, pirates, and tavern matrons 
      • Recreationist heaven

Tour Information    

      • The tours will meet at the Swansboro Area Heritage Center, 502 Church Street
      • Parking is available in the parking lot across the street and at the Swansboro Town Hall lot 601 Corbett Ave.
      • Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your tour starts:  1pm and 3pm April 26, 2019
      • Two tours are available at $20/person/tour
      • Donations will go the Swansboro Historical Association for the development of the Swansboro Area Heritage Center
      • Our journey will last about 40 minutes with time afterwards for questions
      • Wear comfortable shoes for an approximate one-half mile tour around the Swansboro Historic District
