“Let’s Talk Tobacco”

“Let’s Talk Tobacco”  a presentation on the history and culture of tobacco in the world and in Eastern North Carolina will be held on Friday, June 15 at the Swansboro Area Heritage Center at 502 Church Street at 7 PM.

Billy Yeargin, author of several books on the subject, will be telling the development of the tobacco industry, the architecture of the tobacco barns, the methods, and the livestyle of the bygone days of farm life in this area.

The audience will be invited to participate in the discussion and to share stories of growing up “priming”, “cropping”, “looping,” “stringing”, “hanging” and “handing.”

Mr. Yeargin, educated at both Duke and University of North Carolina, and University of Oxford England, has taught at North Carolina community colleges, and worked in radio  and televiseion in Durham and Greenville.  In audition he is an interim Supply Pastor for the North Carolina United Methodist Church.

The Heritage Center is developing an exhibit on tobacco farming, as well as fishing, and cotton.  A timeline in the museum traces the history of the area from early native American through the Twentieth Century.  Admission is free; donations are always welcome.  The museum is open Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM, and Sunday 1 PM – to 4 PM.
