Swansboro Goes to the Farm – Fundraiser Success

The last weekend in April the SHA hosted “Swansboro goes to the Farm” at the Sanders’ home and property in Bear Creek.  It was a beautiful day to view a lovely historical home, to ride on an old restored fire truck, view the packhouse with all the farm tools and equipment and  to enjoy a delicious barbecue at the Old Jolly Roger bar and restaurant which was moved from Front Street, Swansboro, to the Sander’s Farm in the early 1990s.  Gloria Sanders shared stories of the family and the history of the property as well as some interesting stories of her grandfather Carl Tolson’s trips driving the locals to New Bern.   The SHA board sends a great thank you to Gloria and her sister, Sarah Sanders Heller for sharing this property with us.

Traditionally the Swansboro Historical Association has held a Historic Homes tour as a major fundraiser on the last Saturday in April.  This year with all the devastation in town from hurricane Florence, the Association was grateful that the Sanders family invited them out to the farm. To those who attended, the Association extends a special thank you and those who could not come missed a “mighty fine” event.  Next year the Association is looking forward to another special event to further its mission.  Whatever event occurs on April 25, 2020 promises to be a great one.
