Swansboro Historical Association Annual Meeting

The Swansboro Historical Association will hold its annual meeting on May 23, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the old Emmerton School, Church St. Swansboro.

We will have a short business meeting to present a slate of officers and board members, present a budget for 2017-2018, recap the Historic Homes Tour and report on the Heritage Center.

Our presentation will be by Christine N. Brin who is an educator with the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort. This talk will focus on the lives of the 18th century female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read and the world in which they existed. Most existing work about Bonny and Read discusses the two individuals, with little discussion of the effect contemporary gender roles and expectations may have had on their chosen paths. This presentation uses an exploration of these women’s lives and the culture within which they grew up to present a better understanding of not just these individuals but also insight into the expectations or limitations for women during the early 18th century.

Following this presentation we will have a guest “lady pirate” who will indeed concur with our guest from the Maritime Museum. Who is it? Come and meet her!

Donations will be accepted to continue work in the Heritage Center.
